H*d Vs B(K)*d

Disclaimer : This is a result of watching some boring Indian Cinema for the past few weekends. The author of the post(who’s all for the creativity *air quote*)would like to express her choler on the ape culture followed in most movie productions.

As I was watched Night-Out on TV,I mused why Indian Film Industry failed to interest me as much as the Big H did .What’s it that Hollywood has, that Bollywood doesn’t (I’m pretty sure the answer to this is a non-exhaustive list).

genre#1 on the list was the lack of genres in Indian cinema. As far as my memory fetches,I only remember seeing movies that had a blend of 3 to 4 of the genres(masala) like drama(family moments-watch Kabhi kush kabhi gham, you’ll see 😛 ),romance(hero & heroine) action (stunts by the villain who plans to woo the heroine) sprinkled with a bit a cheesy comedy(which could be a separate timeline on the movie).I feel that this coercion is majorly accountable for the débâcle. The one-many(1 movie->many genres) mapping methodology should cease if we are to improve.Compared to this,Hollywood flicks stick to  a particular(/minimal) genre(s) and beautifully finish the job.At the end of the movie you can’t help admiring the way the movie was made!

There’s no doubt as to which industry has the upper hand when it comes to creativity, awesomeness and the big bucks..

Before making absurd claims about Bollywood and it originality or its popularity compared to Hollywood. How about first coming up with an original name for Indian film industry?

Bollywood is rip off of Hollywood. The nation which can’t even come up with an original name needs to be quiet instead of making themselves a butt of joke by making absurd claims that they are more popular then Hollywood. :-/

Movie making is not just money its art. Before even thinking of money you need to have a concept which comes without any cost. Once you have a great concept money can always follow. The thing is Indian movie productions just want to make a masala movie and just get away with it. Hollywood does a hell lot of research for minutest things. They do a research on location, research on character(his life, his actions, his mannerisms),research on how extras fit in) . I don’t think there is problem with money with bollywood, when they can spend 50 crores on crap movie like devdas they can always get money. Till now actors like big B,SRK,Hritik have never done a role which depicts a real life character : Eg:-

Tom cruise in born on the 4th of july(he played Ron Kovic)
Philip Seyomor Hoffman in CAPOTE(he played Truman Capote)
Leornardo in The Avaitor(Howard Hughes)
Russel crow in A Beautiful Mind(John Nash)
You talk about money ,The blair witch project was shot on a handy cam..That’s what I call creativity. You dont need money all you need is creativity to think and come up with new concepts. We always end up imitating all the crap of West..

Krrishh – batman mixed with the gown, flying and fighting style of Neo from Matrix

Koi Mil Gaya – a clown like “Jadoo” which is a ‘comic’ imitation of Spielberg’s wonderful E. T.

Ayan – Catch me if you can

vamanan – Enemy of the state

Ghajini – Memento

Nayagan – Godfather

Aniyan – Tell me your dreams(Sidney Sheldon)

Kismat Connection – Just my luck

ATM – Final Destination

Guru – Aviator

3 roses – Charlie’s Angels

I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to this list! Leave your additions in the comment section

However….Equally preposterous is the claim that Hollywood is original. If you watch some Japanese anime or movies, you’ll see how much material Hollywood takes from them..Remember Kill Bill?  Read the Manga (graphic novels) called Lone Wolf and Cub, which was written in the 1970’s, and you will see where all the ideas for that movie came from. Matrix? Heavily inspired by the anime Ghost in the Shell.Though I don’t disagree that Bollywood produces crap. It does, but I think Hollywood does much better, though they do produce more excellent material, and their crap is just done better.

The Best of Indian Cinema (My rating,in no particular order) :

In K*d, Chennai 600028,Saroja,Anjali,Roja,Mozhi,Varanam ayiram,Anbae Sivam,Dasavadharam,Mouna Ragam,Nadodigal. In Tamil almost all of Director Mani Rathnam’s&Venkat Prabhu’s,Actor Kamal Hasan’s are must-see’s !

In B*d Amir Khan is my personal favourite when it comes to productions..Tare Zameen par is Class 1 material ! Apart from that Black,Race,DDLJ,KKHH,Slum Dog Millionaire(The Oscar Award Winner) are worth every penny!

In H*d,Adam Sandler in Comedy,Steven Speilberg in Scifi,Audrey Hepburn in Classics,Julie Andrews in Musicals,Anne Hathaway in any genre 🙂  are a few of my favs.

bollywood-versus-hollywood-marketing-costs

Total worldwide Bollywood revenue: 1.3 bn USD

Titanic gross: 1.9 USD

Total sum of all bollywood movies gross is 2/3 of single hollywood movie.

<-Stats that can be projected.(Therefore, you cant say its outdated)

Well this is the end of my compare and contrast round.Time for some image exemplification 😛 that was lying in some far off corner of my mailbox.

Bollywood vs Hollywood cute similarity of funny connection

Bollywood-Hollywood

bollywood_hollywood_0 bollywood_hollywood_03 bollywood_hollywood_01 bollywood_hollywood_04 bollywood_hollywood_02 bollywood_hollywood_05 bollywood_hollywood_06 bollywood_hollywood_07 bollywood_hollywood_08 bollywood_hollywood_09

Most of the image contrasts are brilliant and I love the Tom Hanks Vs Amir Khan contrast. And the last one – MJ Vs SRK is really funny 😆

Before I wind this up,I must give due credit to Indian Film Industry for inventing a new genre that we Tamilians like to call ‘Mokkai’..There’s no dearth of this genre in recent times especially with the ilaya thalapathi and Thala at work. All hail Mr.Sam Anderson (The God of this genre) – Watching these padams(movies) with pals can be fun..watching it alone can be a nightmare!

  1. Indian cine industry will improve only wen these people start to think of their own and stop copying other scripts and most importantly stop their masalas..
It will take ages for the people to come out their present situation and make good movies within which Hollywood have gone further forward. As of me Kamal has the calibre to deliver in Hollywood. His scripts are marvellous and are too advanced for the Indian industry and that is the reason why his films are not a big hit here

  2. Hi,

It is just like, I ask my mom to cook, some disk similar to what they made in my friends home or something telecast in TV/ when I tasted while up board or she by her own by seeing this all.

We just taste it and congratulate her even we know/don’t know, that is her own dish 🙂 🙂

Similarly, Our Bollywood copying things from Hollywood. 🙂 🙂

If I am correct, All the Indians don’t know English, so they wont go and see Hollywood movies. So, they are bringing the taste of Hollywood to their standard.

The people like us, know more then one languages, seeing variety of movies, and compares. Because, in our point of view, the std of bollywood less compared to hollywood. One can disagree in this also.

(e,g) Some ll say, Ghajini in Tamil is Damn good…someone know in Hindi. That’s based on their view..
There are someone, who doesn’t know. the film came Tamil and say…what a story!! it was 🙂 poor fan ?!?!??!?!

There are creators who make their own. At the same time, since money playing a major role, producer/director/actor/actress replicates somethings to make it work 🙂 🙂

  3. Gracy i went to a live musical in honor of poet vairamuthus contribution to the film industry. The show was done by sujatha srinivas and unni…well i came to know the amount of work involved behind each song..each bit of creativity..Witht the less investment they put..the wrk ok..we cant comment tat easily..

  4. What you say is absolutely right !!! we do lack creativity a LOT when we compare to the English i mean Hollywood movies… well the point is… in any field of work they do… they probe into things so deep to reach the end… and wont ever come back until they finished their projects !!!! But the thing is “Sometimes they can even lose track of where are they going !!!”…… yes as u say the finish they make are flamboyant…. for instance “Devil Wears Prada”… and the “Fashion”….
well we are Copycat ting a LOT from them … food like Pizzas, hot dogs…. but why ?? CLUELESS…. we think its a RAGE !!! well actually not…
but hey i dont know bout the BOLLYWOOD…
we do have some geniuses here….. KAMAL HASAN… ILAYARAJA…. and if u look into the Tamil Literature… u have the treasure there…. Bharathiyaar…. Moniyan Selvan… infact we can create animation movies from it !!!
    🙂 🙂

  5. @Becks:
I think so too..But hey, I’m just hoping that the ages comes earlier than we expect.
btw, Know any other copycat-ed movie? I know u r one big movie buff.

  6. @Balaji :
That is one way to look @ it…But if tat’s the case I think due credit must be given to the creative mind that fabricated the original plot.
Aping hinders our thought process and it’ll lead us to nowhere new..
Even though what you say makes total sense, I think that just wouldn’t work in a world where customer demands get higher by the minute 😛
Its high time our people scampered up to greater heights!

    @Sudha:
Yeup I heard about the show via print media…
I do realise its easier commented than done.. But that’s what critics are for 😛 To invariably kick ’em in the face ,to keep pushing them higher 🙂

  7. @Sreedevi:
So Fashion is a copy of The Devil wears Prada??? I havent seen it,which is why I’m asking so that I could update the list..
    And animation…We’re nowhere near it,sadly 😦

    @all :
Do jot down flicks that you think have an alter 🙂 I’d like to update mine list!

  8. Hi gracy.
Yeah, Bollywood and kollywood are copying almost scene-by-scene from Hollywood.
Latest addition is Kandasamy, which is a mix of Superman, spiderman, Heman and related movies..
and regarding Sam anderson. there is a great one for you to hear and watch.
Go to utube and google for sam anderson. there is a movie in tamil called yaaruku yaar step nee. there is a hero and heroine and dance movements, story, action are awesome. Compared to hero, sam anderson is zero. do check it once

  9. Everytime a director/hero gives an interview about his next movie, they invariably express that the movie plot is new and will have a social message but the truth is just opposite. It would be fine if it is doesn’t make an adverse impact upon society. the term “commercial film” has become a cliche. Needless conceited punch dialogues, crude language in the name of comedy (the so called comedians like karunas, santhanam, K.karuppu, bhaskar must learn from veterans like Nakesh -There are numerous ways to make people laugh then why make use of obnoxious words), ear grating songs( audience have witnessed the same music track in infinite number of introduction songs) ,implausible yarn, intolerable violence, more talk-less action villain, unexciting screenplay are the attributes of commercial films nowadays even though technology has grown. In the quest for perfection Kamal Haasan is peerless, present directors/heroes must learn from him.
Theatres are getting transformed into marriage halls in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, but cinema makers will always maintain deaf ear to critics bcoz “Once they take a decision even they won’t heed to it” (Naan oru thadava mudivu pannitena en paecha nane kaekka maten -thanks Dr.Vijay).
Nice post, comparisons between hollywood and bollywood were excellent.
    🙂

  10. @Karthik:
Yeah I sooo wanna watch ‘yarruku yar stephnie’ Will be downloading it soon..Hope the internet is sprawled with many links/seeds!

    @Bala :
    >> “commercial film” has become a cliche.
    Totally !!
    About the ear grating music..I think we’re gettin somewhere..Karan Johar’s new movie(My name is Khan,starring SRK & Kajol \m/ 😉 ) has none!! Way 2 go 😛 !
    btw,Nice ‘comment-post’ ! 🙂

  11. Nice Insight .. 🙂
All your favorites mentioned above are really worth watching ..
But why do you insult ‘Puratchi Tsunami’ Sam Anderson 😉

  12. @witsnnuts :
    Oh No no….
“All hail Mr.Sam Anderson (Puratchi Tsunami) ”
    I meant this is a non-sarcastic kind o way ! I do love watching his flicks! 😉
